The Securities and Exchange Commission was created in 1934 to supervise licensing of stock exchanges. The act provided a program of regulatory control over the purchase and sale of stocks and bonds to prevent a recurrence of the stock market crash of 1929. Regulations established standards for the conduct of stock brokers, the control of unrestricted speculation, and the illegality of false advertising.
